Keramiek

Riet Bakker lives and works in a small village in Friesland
in the northern part of the Netherlands.

Ways of working
With a keen eye for detail Riet creates, from cut slabs of stoneware, subtle organic abstract objects wich have a tight composition. She searches for perfect profiles, flowing lines and naturally abstracted visual imagery. She strives for minute nuances that makes each piece different and unique. Colour and structure of the glaze is just as important as the form itself. Various thick Iayers of slib and/or crawling glazes are sprayed along carefully cut masks and individually fired before each next glaze is applied. These create depths and relief and form a stark contrast with the layers of satin soft glazes and/or other materials like wood, metal, glass. It is this technique that gives an extra dimension to Riet Bakker’s work and evokes a strong sensory response to the pieces.

Inspiration

The architectural aspect of art forms in nature and the dynamic or growhts and motion of (micro-)organism. Original drawings and pictures are freely interpreted into new objects.

Development
Riet Bakker originally started off in medicine, practising for many years. Working with clay developped soon from hobby to passion. In 1986 she opened her own studio. initially she still continued to work part-time as a doctor, but later became a full-time ceramic artist. 1983 - 1988: She learned the basics of throwing and handbuilding in the workshops of experienced practioners. 2006 - 2008 Sculpture course (Koudum). She has regular shows at home and abraod.
